Antares Voss would not have seemed anything special to anyone in the galaxy had they met him in his formative years. While his life was not particularly harsh, it was not the life of the elite either. His parents were working class people and he was raised with similar values and goals for his own life. That simple life was not the one he would ultimately end up leading however.
When it happened no one was exactly sure, but at some point in his life Antares developed a deep hatred of those who were not like him. Aliens of all sorts, their color did not matter, only that they were no human like he was. It was this hatred that fueled Antares rise to power in the galaxy. Hatred is such a powerful tool and he used that tool to build an Empire.
In his late twenties Antares was elected to join the senate, representing his home planet and replacing a long time family friend who had elected to retire. Antares knew the main reason he won election was due to the retired senators endless support and campaigning on his behalf, but he accepted the post with great pride, knowing he could do much good for his planet, Rendili.
Many suspect that it was Rendili's long standing fued with neighboring planet Duro that created Antares hatred of alien species. For years a border war raged between the two as they struggled for control of space trade in the area as well as the right to police the space lanes. Corellia would normally be the big player, but their third neighbor was busy with other endeavors and had not time to deal with its two lesser neighbors.
As his years in the senate passed though, Antares managed to quell many skirmished between planets making himself seem more and more useful to the galaxy because he had succeeded where those before him had failed miserably. He had an elegance, and a charm that allowed him to gain the trust of those around him, even aliens as much as he might despise them secretly. To that end he also took the opportunity to not only move himself up the ranks of the senate, joining several committees and being appointed to several others, but he also took the opportunities to engage planets to plant the seeds of distrust. Distrust not only of aliens, but alien distrust of neighboring planets. It was the subterfuge that created skirmishes and civil wars that he could follow up and squash out with his negotiating skills.
The way he managed personalities and set planet against planet covertly only to come in and broker peace publically brightened his star.
